On 3rd December, 2001 the UE Council declared 2003 as the European year of People with Disabilities.
This initiative wants to:

- raise awareness of no discrimination and integration
- support concrete actions to promote equal opportunities and social inclusion
- inform of good practice at local, national and European level
- increase the cooperation among all people working on policies for people with disabilities
- spread a positive image of people with disabilities
- promote the rights of children and young people with disabilities at school

Italy, as all the other UE Member States, carries out the measures of the Decision of UE Council at a national level. The Organization of national coordination has been established in the Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs together with the Department for the Community Policies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. It is made up of the representatives of Ministries, Regions, local Authorities and Associations; it deals with the realization of the initiatives for the European year of people with disabilities in our country.
