November 17th: the Minister Maroni
received the Roosevelt Disability Award 2003
On
November 17th 2003 Roberto Maroni, the Italian Minister of Welfare, received
the prestigious International Franklin Delano Roosevelt Disability Award
at UNO Palace in New York. Maroni replaced Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the President
of the Republic, who had to come back to Italy after the attack on the
Italian peace contingent. The prize confirms the great effort of the Italian
government on disability problems and arouses a future engagement in this
field.
The Ministry will propose to allocate the money ($50.000) to the National
Council for Disability and the 1000 wheelchairs to Associations members
of FISH (Italian Federation for Handicap Overcoming) and FAND (National
Federation of Associations for Disability).
The prize is conferred by the Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Institute
to a Country that carried out normative progress for the integration of
people with disabilities and developed very innovative practises.
The International Disability Award was conferred to the Minister Maroni
on 17th November, at 11 am, during a ceremony at the presence of the UNO
General Secretary Kofi Annan. The official explanation affirms that “The
Italian policy improves the living conditions of many people with disabilities
and at the same time it is also an example for other nations”.
Maroni declared “I am honoured for taking part in this ceremony
as representative of Italy and substitute of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the
President of the Republic, who had to be present at the funeral rites
of Italian soldiers killed in Iraq. The explanation that accompanies the
prize recognizes the Italian progress in carrying out the targets of the
UNO Program on the problems of people with disabilities”.
The Minister also added “This prize recognizes the efforts of Italian
institutions and citizens, but above all of the volunteers who are engaged
every day to favour the integration of people with disabilities. For this
reason, I wanted to dedicate this prize to them during the prize-giving
ceremony”.
The Roosevelt Disability Award will be conferred to Ciampi at the end
of the Closing Conference of the European Year of People with Disabilities.
